3 Things You Should Do In A Debt Elimination Plan

June 12th, 2010 by Philipe Steward in Debt

Putting together a debt elimination plan can be a difficult task, especially if your a beginner.  Their can be a lot of pitfalls that you could fall into so in this article I’m going to give you three things you should defiantly do when running your own debt plan.

Pay Just The Minimum Payments

The first thing you need to do is pay just the minimum payments towards your debts.  This might sound counterproductive but this is one of the biggest mistakes people make trying to get out of debt.  They will put a small amount of money toward each individual debt.

The problem with this is that you will dilute all of your efforts and end up paying tons in interest as a result.  Instead pay just the minimums and push the rest of your money towards the debt with the lowest balance.  This will ensure the quickest payoff and a great sign that you are on the right track.

Don’t Use Your Credit Cards

Next you need to realize that with all debt relief programs you need to control your spending.  Once you have a debt paid off such as a credit card it is vitally important that you don’t use that card again.

In fact you may want to consider cutting up the card and canceling the card altogether.  This may hurt your credit score a bit but in the long run you won’t have to suffer the drawbacks of loading up you credit cards again and again.

Build Emergency Funding

Finally, in order to prevent yourself from living paycheck to paycheck it is very important that you build up a 6 month emergency fund.  This funding will keep you from siting up at night wondering how you are going to pay this months bills.

In the end these three things will make it easier for you to make your debt plan a great one and one day maybe a financial success.
